DAY : Sunday 11th June
TIME : 4.00pm start
VENUE : Morpeth Festival
This was the Underdogs first outdoor gig and its only been just over a year since we started
gigging on the pub circuit, although this was not a pub - something quite different as the
quality of outdoor music can be hard to control and get right.
We were booked to play the closing slot which we were more than happy to do and would be approx
45mins long.
There were two stages one tucked around the back of Iceland which was called the 'rock stage'
and one a the top of the main street in the town centre which was the 'main stage'.
Throughout the day the rock stage had young bands playing mainly original material and the main
stage had everything from a Steel band to classic rock from us The Underdogs.
The main roads through Morpeth are closed off during the day of the festival and there are
thousands of people passing through watching whats going on and visiting the stalls etc.
We only had half an hour to get our gear on stage and set up for our start time of 4.00pm and
that included using our own PA, so we were working up quite a sweat in what was a very hot
sunny day (weather wise it could not have been better) as we did not have time to do a sound check,
we did what we could and hoped everything would sound OK.
Into our first number spot on 4.00pm as agreed, The Boxtops - The Letter 'give me a ticket to
an aeroplane, ain't got time to take a fast train' remember? and everything sounded great (even
from on stage) and it was a thumbs up from friends and family down in the crowd.
Whilst there was a reasonable dedicated crowd watching us it was nearing the end of the day and
lots of people had started to leave, but we finished our set and got asked to do an encore (which
as most bands know with a pub gig by the end of the night a lot of people are half cut and would
cheer for more no matter who the band were) but in the cold light of day, we as a band were very
pleased to get a good response from our audience and our first appearance at the festival.
So much so that as soon as we were finished playing and still on stage the orginizers booked us
to play next year, they felt we played the right mix of songs for an event like this - something
for everybody - and we do it very well indeed.
See if you can pop along to one of gigs and lets us know what you think.
Until next time.
